Say Hello to Passive Shirt Profits!
My T-shirt tutorial website is live, and I’m more excited than ever about this launch! Why? Because for the first time, I’m executing things in the right order. Although 2 Create a Website has seen tremendous success, I always felt like I was doing things backwards. For instance, I waited too long to start an email list or sell products—but that’s because I didn’t have to at the time.
However, the landscape has changed since my initial launch, and so must my strategy. When I launched a site years ago, my focus was on building extensive content for search engine traffic and monetizing it through affiliate links and ads. That strategy won’t cut it anymore. Today, I’m more concerned with list-building and selling my own products.
In this post, I’ll share what’s different about my new site and how I’ve evolved as a business owner. But first, let’s dive into…
Passive Shirt Profits
Since diving into Merch by Amazon last fall, I’ve become completely obsessed with print-on-demand (POD) – the process of uploading an image, adding it to a product, and earning royalties when sold. By year-end, I expect to cross the six-figure mark in royalties, with most earnings coming recently. I’ve also expanded my designs across 25+ niches/topics thanks to Merch—all on a part-time basis!
I created Passive Shirt Profits for two primary reasons:
- Diversify income: I want to move beyond the unreliable POD income stream and offer courses.
- Fill a gap: There’s a void in the market when it comes to helping beginners learn software for creating T-shirt designs. I often hear people in the POD community complain about the difficulty of Photoshop or Illustrator, and I think, “That’s ’cause you haven’t taken my courses!” 😀
I’m not just focused on individual POD sites like Merch by Amazon; I want to teach practical skills. This includes generating creative shirt concepts for various niches (a secret weapon I’ve used with Merch by Amazon) and software mastery. Many Merch courses offer the same information, so mine will include more hands-on lessons.
Competitor Research: It’s essential to research what competitors are doing and pay attention to comments in private groups, forums, etc. This inspired my upcoming course offerings.
What I’m Doing Differently:
1. Early Email List Deployment: I will never launch another site without an email list. Although I launched one for this site in 2010 (eight years after 2 Create a Website), I didn’t have products to sell then. This time, I started an email list immediately and, thanks to my private group and podcast, already have 31 subscribers after just two weeks!
2. Podcasting Success: I launched the PSP Podcast on May 29th without any announcement, and had 30+ downloads and two email subscribers within the first week! (I include a call to action for my list at the end of each episode.) This demonstrates that people are actively searching for and listening to podcasts about Merch and print-on-demand—a smart choice as part of my traffic strategy. Podcasting is generally an excellent option for money/business topics.
After two weeks, I’ve already surpassed 150 downloads!
